Recycle

Slags are produced in large amounts in pyrometallurgical processes, and they are a major source of waste if not properly recycled and utilized. Sanitary landfills are required for metallurgical slags and disposal costs also increase with increasing industrialization. Landfills filled with waste materials have become sources of pollution causing air, soil and water pollution. And these have impact on human health and plant growth.Slag recycling efforts have environmental and economic objectives. Reprocessed slag may be substituted for most of the other required high cost materials. Slag recycling reduces waste, disposal costs and energy consumption, and extends the service life of the furnace.Slag is subjected to crushing-sieving-grinding and magnetic separation processes in the recycling plants established to extract metal from slag. Slag from which the metal is recovered is crushed, grinded, and sized based on its intended use.

Paving Stones Made from Slag

Concrete keystones are construction materials that are produced by mixing cement, aggregate, water and additives if necessary at certain ratios using concrete paving block machinery, and initially have plastic consistency and harden in time due to hydration of cement. Slag aggregates are grained materials such as sand, gravel, crushed stone that are used in making concrete with cement and water. Approximately 75% of the concrete volume consists of aggregate.

Concrete Blocks Made from Slag

The primary material used in making concrete blocks is cement. Cement is mixed with water, sand, and gravel. Slag may be used replacing sand and gravel in making concrete blocks. These are called slag blocks. While a typical concrete block is 17.2 to 19.5 kg on the average, slag block weighs 11.8 to 15.0 kg.

Port Concrete Block and Tetrapod Constructions

Slag material is homogeneously mixed when preparing concrete blocks and manufactured by pouring paving blocks in forms.Iron and steel slags can be used in coastal jetty (tetrapod) manufacture to protect coastal sets from extreme sea waves.

Railway Ballast

Ballast material consists of crushed stone layer mixed into sleepers. Ballast material allows for a more even distribution of load and vibration generated by the axles on the platform, and brings flexibility and extends the maintenance life of the railroad. Moreover, it prevents plant growth on the platform. It is found out in studies that the grain structure of steel mill slags meets the standard values.

Asphalt Production

Steelphalt asphalt plant produces asphalt by obtaining slag extracted from steel production processes in the nearby iron and steel plants. The plant constructs extremely durable roads that meet the requirements of highway directorates and municipalities by using 98% slag in asphalt production.

Road Embankment and Infrastructure

Direct use of EAO and ladle slags as filling material is the first method of making use of such industrial outputs.

Cement Industry

Slag refined from metal content is grinded and used as cement additive.Slag refined from metal content is sized and used as iron ore substitute in cement plants.

Fertilizer

Today, steel mill slags are used as fertilizers due to their Fe content and elements beneficial for the plants. Phosphor content and other minerals allow for the slag to be used for agricultural purposes and soil minerals to be released. In ornamental plant growing; the fertilizer added to the plant as supplement will be retained thanks to its holding capacity
